The Project on «Excellence Digital Archive for Polo Museale Fiorentino» is in advanced realization phase by MICC - University of Florence, Hitachi Ltd. and Centrica Srl, under the coordination of Superintendent Cristina Acidini. Several art-works of Polo Museale Fiorentino have been digitized at very high resolution, by using new digital acquisition and image processing systems.

Fig. 1 shows the digital acquisition of «Nascita di Venere» in November 2009. Two digital cameras were used to acquire an image with 1200 ppi (pixels per inch) resolution. Total number of obtained pixels is about 10 Giga pixels.
In the evolution of the Project, Virtual Galleries have been designed and organized for several purposes:

a. To verify, with real public visitors, the attraction of Virtual Galleries, also with written comments.
b. To test experimental systems, mainly represented by high resolution «touch screen» displays and audio presentations.
c. To test Virtual Gallery set-up with special booths and systems.

Two Virtual Galleries were organized: 1) at Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Tokyo (5-20 October 2009); 2) at Baptistery «San Giovanni in Corte» in Pistoia (12 December 2009 - 31 January 2010).
In particular in the Virtual Gallery in Pistoia, sponsored by Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Pistoia e Pescia, eight digital art-works of Polo Museale Fiorentino were shown:

1. Annunciazione, Leonardo Da Vinci
2. Madonna del Magnificat, Sandro Botticelli
3. Sacra Famiglia detta «Tondo Doni», Michelangelo
4. Madonna del cardellino, Raffaello
5. Madonna della seggiola, Raffaello
6. La Libecciata, Giovanni Fattori
7. Dittico dei Duchi d'Urbino, Piero della Francesca
8. Il canto d'uno stornello, Silvestro Lega.

In addition an important art-work in the Cathedral of Pistoia, the Crucifix by Coppo di Marcovaldo and Coppo di Salerno, was acquired by Centrica SrL and shown in the Baptistery. The Virtual Gallery, under the coordination of Superintendent Cristina Acidini of Polo Museale Fiorentino and Prof. Vito Cappellini of Florence University, had a great success. More than 16.000 Visitors were in the Baptistery. Thousands of written comments were left by Visitors with near unanimous appreciation of the visit to the Virtual Gallery. In particular the request is emerging for other Virtual Galleries in the near future.
