The Large Bronzes of the Baptistry. Giovanfrancesco Rustici and Leonardo
Firenze, Museo Nazionale del Bargello, 10 settembre 2010 – 10 gennaio 2011
Roberto Cantini

This is the first exhibition dedicated to the sculptor Giovanfrancesco Rustici born in 1475 in Florence, his apprenticeship took place in the well-known Garden of St. Mark under the protection of Lorenzo The Magnificent. He was very close to Leonardo of whom was a pupil and faithful collaborator.

The main element of the exhibition if the masterpiece by Rustici, the Sermon of the Baptist, a sculptural group with three huge personages in bronze planned and made by Leonardo da Vinci and that were placed over the North Gate of the Baptistry in 1511.

This work has been duly restored and now we can admire it in the whole beauty thanks to the generous support by the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore and the contribution of the Friends of Florence.

Furthermore in the exhibition we can see for the first time from 1508 the San Giovanni by Leonardo coming from the Museum of Louvre, and this is a real and unique opportunity for the Italians and the citizens of the world in Florence to admire this masterpiece.

The scientific project of the exhibition, managed by Beatrice Paolozzi Strozzi, has been cared by Tommaso Mozzati, Beatrice Paolozzi Strozzi and Philippe Sénéchal.

The nice catalogue is published by Giunti.
