Joseph in the tapestries by Pontormo and Bronzino. A journey among the treasures of the Quirinale

Starting from april 29th up to june 30th 2010 it is possible to visit in the halls of the Galleria of Pope Alexander VII at the Palazzo del Quirinale, the exhibition «Joseph in the tapestries by Pontormo and Bronzino. A journey among the treasures of the Quirinale». The exhibition has just been opened by the President of the Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano with the aim to celebrate the achievement of the huge project of restoration of the ten tapestries representing the stories of Joseph, realised on drawings by Pontormo and Bronzino and that were included in the collections of the Quirinale at the end of the nineteenth century.

The collection includes ten out of the twenty tapestries ordered by Cosimo I of the Medici starting from 1545 to refurnish entirely the Sala dei Duecento in Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, and where at present we can admire the other half of the collection.

The tapestries that we can see in this exhibition have been restored by the workshop of the Quirinale that takes care of the maintenance of the huge collection of fabrics that are present in the Palace. «It is the deep intention of the President that most of people have the possibility to see and to admire the Palace and the various collections» affirms Louis Godart, the culture councillor of the President of the Republic, and this of the tapestries is the most important.

I must say that during my lonely visit of the exhibition I felt as I was living in another period of my life, with a real deep emotion both artistic and human when looking at the magnificence coming out from the brightness of colours and the mastery of the fabrics.

Visitors can see the exhibition without any booking and free of charge with the entrance in the Piazza del Quirinale, from Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 1am and from 15.30pm to 18.30pm, while on Sundays from 8.30am to 12am. The exhibition is closed on Mondays and in the following days: 1,2 and 30th May and 1, 2, 20 and 27th June.
