Back in China after half century - 1 part Renato Risaliti

Renato Risaliti (born in Agliana, Pistoia, on 20. 5. 1935; leaves in Pistoia) is regular professor of History of West Europe at the Florence University.

In historical circle he's author of many works, for example: "Togliatti between Gramsci and Necaev (Omnia Minima Editrice, Prato, 1995), "Gli Slavi e l'Italia Cirvi", Moncalieri, 1996) e "Histoty of Russia. From origin to nineteenth century (Bruno Mondadori, Milano, 2005).

He is also author of essay of literary subject: "M.A. Bulgakov (Lito- Offset Felici, Pisa, 1972) and History of the Russian theater"( Toscana Nuova, Firenze, 1998-1)
I have been back in China after half century and I've found it transformed, so changed that I am still shocked now that I'm back in Italy from one week. First of all because I have found its capital city Beijing really modified. 50 years ago were passed only 10 years from the proclamation of the Popular China. Beijing still had the character of a city with two floors' houses around the Forbidden City, that means the imperial palaces. In the old China, the so called "Middle Reign", any house couldn't exceed the high of the palaces of the Forbidden City. The penalty for the transgressors, was the maximum pain. Nobody could think to exceed "the son of the sky".

On the contrary now I've found a really different capital city: many skyscrapers, large avenues with intense traffic, while 50 years before the streets were half-empty of vehicles. Then I have found twinkling shops full of goods of every kind. In the past the city were poorly illuminated, while now I've seen it dazzling, full of neon-lights, everywhere there are garishly illuminated advertisements.

The airport of Beijing is high grade, also for the internal airlines for Xi'an, the town where have been found the famous terracotta-army.
The hotels where we stayed were excellent everywhere.
The touristic structure, not only in Beijing but also in an internal town like Xi'an, is higher than our. The guides speak a perfect Italian; the prices of all the goods I have bought are invincible. The Chinese kindness is perfect everywhere.

I have been also in Shanghai, that in my opinion, nowadays is over New York, from all point of you.
Please find here some numbers: the city now has got 19 millions of inhabitants, as the capital city Beijing. But the most populated town is Chongqing with even 31 millions of inhabitants! These three cities together with Tientsin have got a mayor (governor) nominated directly by the central government. When we arrived in Shangai airport we need even five hours to get in the city centre by bus. The traffic was very intense. When we arrived in the central part of the city we have seen viaducts with four levels, all of them full of cars.
Circa 50 years before (1960) in Shanghai there were only four or five skyscrapers, today there are 4 thousand. Every hour lay the foundations of a new one. The metro lines are eight, and we'll become five more for the World-wide Expo of 2010, when the city will have 21 thousands inhabitants.
There's also in service a railway line where every quarter of an hour leaves a train with magnetic traction speed 420 km/hour, that creates serious problems to the houses near the rail.

In conclusion New York turn pale in comparison with the development of Shanghai, that has got also an intense nightlife. The different guides that we met in the various cities (Beijing and Xi'an) have underline the difference of expansion between cities and country that increases gradually that we proceed toward the West (Tibet e Xinjiang), areas populated by other ethnic groups respect the ethnic group hau (Chinese ); these others groups profess the lamaistic Buddhism in Tibet and the Islamism among the Turkish ethnic groups of Xinjiang. These people form ca. 7 % of the total population.

If I make a comparison among the Countries of the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) that I have visited, I have to say that it doesn't seem to me that the differences between city and country are superior respect the States I mentioned, on the contrary they seem to me minor. First of all because I have seen everywhere a lot of fruits, meat (chicken, fish and pork) and bread, sign that the production in the country face efficaciously the growing standard of living of the cities.
